Running After Pregnancy – What are the guidelines?

Running After Pregnancy

We get asked this question frequently – when can I return to running after giving birth?

The UK Post-Natal Running Guidelines were published in March 2019 and state that:

> Running should not be attempted less than 3 months post-delivery, regardless of whether the delivery was via vaginal or C-Section (as a gentle cut- off date)

> All women should be assessed by a pelvic floor physiotherapist prior to returning to high impact sport

Screening & assessment for return to running & high impact activity includes:

> Pelvic floor assessment by a Women’s Health Physiotherapist

> Scar tissue healing status

> Strength Testing (General strength & endurance – is the body ready?)

> Abdominal screen for ab separation (Diastasis Recti)

If you pass the screening, you will be recommended a graded return to the running program such as the ‘Couch to 5k’. If you do not pass the screening, you will be given an individualized rehabilitation program to address dysfunctional areas, and/or referred to relevant professionals (e.g. GP or urogynaecologist).

Through our ‘Post Natal Check’ Appointments, Laura can help you with the above screening process and create a tailored program to get you safely back to running again! You can book today via the ‘Book Online’ tab, or give us a call on 03 9650 4149. For further reading, see the links provided below.
